Thank you for checking out the site. Things will go slowly here for now, but the plan is to post short pieces about things I’m interested in. My research focuses on health and the environments: those we find, those we build, and those we work, rest and play in.
I’m midstream in a three-book project on why, how, and at what cost humans have decided to spend so much time indoors. The first book from this proposed trilogy is Starved for Light: The Long Shadow of Rickets and Vitamin D Deficiency. University of Chicago Press did a fantastic job with all aspects of production. The text isn’t too shabby either, IMO.
I’ll be adding short posts drawn from the book, or tangents and tidbits from the editing floor, like my first blog post about a “Bowlegged Ghost.”
A while back I wrote a book about lead poisoning, and will sometimes weigh in here with new items related to what the industry called “the useful metal.”
I also have a couple of photography-related hobbies. I may post some of my photos here, but I will definitely post photos from my collection of “found” photos, gathered in junk shops, garage sales and eBay. Some are just fun, or pose interesting puzzles for historical investigation or speculation. Some, like this one of a couple doing some beach reading in Santa Monica, ca. 1939, can be both.
I won’t promise to flood the site with new content every week. But I’ll try to keep it light, and sometimes enlightening.
